“Africa is a world within itself, where the past and the present meet in the dust and the sun, and the magic never ends.”
Hi, I am Jo Crichton.
In 2025, my husband and I moved to Zambia with our two young boys, drawn by the allure of something a little unconventional.
My husband is a seasoned country-hopper, before we got married, he could fit all his worldly possessions into two kit bags and had lived in a multitude of countries. Me? I’ve always been more of a homebody. But I love travelling, bino’s in hand and a gin close by. And if there’s cell signal… well, we probably haven’t gone far enough.
We definitely underestimated what moving to Zambia would actually entail. Our second son was just seven days old when we made the decision to move. In a postpartum, sleep-deprived haze, I said yes - I mean, how hard could it be with two small kids?
Spoiler: harder than expected.
We’ve made our fair share of rookie mistakes along the way, and I’ve spent more hours than I can count in various government offices. But through it all, we’ve been learning - where to go, what to do, and how to truly enjoy this beautiful country.
If nothing else, I hope you can learn from a few of my mistakes and feel inspired to explore a little more of this incredible place.
