Off to Zambia we go

Decisions are funny things. We loved our life in South Africa. Family was nearby. Our home was beautiful, meticulously renovated and decorated, every item in its perfect place. I had a well-paying corporate job. Everything was… fine. Perfect, even.

And yet, sometimes, even when nothing is wrong, you find yourself searching for something else.

I have always dreamed of living in the bush. Maybe it’s the romanticism of it or perhaps I’ve just read Out of Africa one too many times. There’s a freedom there that lets you simply be. Time moves differently. Slower. Lighter. Somehow, more real.

Of course, comfort comes at a cost, and dreams need to be affordable. But when my husband was offered an incredible opportunity in Zambia, it felt like the universe was nudging us. And we said yes.

Then reality hit. You start to second-guess yourself, especially when work permits are delayed, borders flood, and you have no idea when you’ll actually leave. The path to Zambia was messy, filled with unknowns. I would like to say it was thrilling, but mostly, it was stressful.

Yet here’s the thing: when a choice aligns with your values, your dreams, and the life you want to build, you find a way to reconcile the fear. You accept the discomfort, fumble through uncertainty, and trust yourself to navigate the chaos. It’s not easy. It’s not tidy. But in the end, you just hope it’s worth it.

Route and stops

We had to go via Gaborone to get to Zambia, not ideal, as Groblersburg is usually quicker and much easier. If you find yourself taking this path, here’s what we did and where we stopped along the way.
